Wind turbine insurance is an offshoot of property owner’s insurance. Instead of insuring your house against earthquakes, tornados, floods and the like, you can insure your investment in alternative energy. The distinction within the insurance industry is important, since no one plans on utilizing a turbine as a dwelling, and so home owner’s insurance doesn’t apply.
Thankfully, since you won’t be living in your turbine, the premiums on wind turbine insurance are generally lower than for home owner’s. A home can be made unlivable, but a turbine merely needs to be in good repair and everything is just fine. A wind turbine does have a more complex system of moving parts than the typical house, but the mechanical integrity is one of the things you can insure.
So if you’re looking for wind turbine insurance, you want to check and see if it offers more than just disaster coverage. It’s certainly conceivable that your windmill is knocked over in an earthquake. But the turbine is no less operative if the gear box burns out, and it is never easy (or cheap!) to fix something at the top of a tower.
